Making a smart choice
“Technology is best when it brings people together”, said Matt Mullenweg, creator of WordPress, the online blogging and content creation platform. Technology has become an integral part of our lives. We use so many devices like smartphones, tablets or computers, to keep ourselves socially active and well informed. Simple accessories have become smart nowadays, like a watch, it not only tells us the time, but also doubles up as a cell phone, a multimedia viewing device, etc. With technological advancements taking place every nanosecond, we come across many astonishing inventions every now and then.
These days, youngsters are at the forefront of technological advancements. Students are the ones who are leading the change and are constantly discovering new technologies. For example, Mark Zuckerberg, created Facebook at Harvard dormitory, to build a social platform where people could connect virtually. Matt Mullenweg, was a freshman in college when he founded WordPress, which is one of the easiest and most powerful blogging and content management systems today. There are many such inspiring stories of innovators who have built their legacy in their youth.
The right education is very important in order to nurture ideas and put them into practice. Nowadays, students have access to a lot of information. However, when it comes to choosing a career, students get confused with many available choices and the pressure to make the perfect decision. Right after our high school, we are expected to make up our minds about what we want to do in life. Under pressure from parents, society and peers, and with very little experience, we are vulnerable to make wrong choices. Even if we decide which university to join, the universities themselves at times fail to provide the required information about courses, subjects, faculty, etc. These were some of the problems that my niece, a bright young student, eager to learn about computers, faced when she finished her high school.
So I offered to help. Using the Internet (everyone’s best friend these days), I did some research and came across University of Technology Sydney (UTS). They have developed an amazing online platform through which you can get all the inside information about the university and its courses from its current students. You can find out more about these student ambassadors, The UTS Insiders, through their website: http://www.insearch.edu.au/insiders/
It’s a novel idea to get first-hand information about a university through its students, and so I contacted the UTS Insiders on behalf of my niece. To my surprise, it was a unique experience to gain the perspective of a student’s journey. After this, I asked my niece to contact Harry, a UTS student from India and currently pursuing an Information Technology course. She also felt that this was the easiest way to know about the student life, not only at the university, but about Sydney as well. Whenever she had a doubt, she just contacted Harry and a few more UTS Insiders to take their opinion and guidance on various topics.
From what I understood, the UTS Insiders are there to help fellow students make an informed decision. This way, students who have just finished their high school education, are able to choose the best course, college and subsequently, a perfect career! UTS Insiders are 12 UTS and UTS:INSEARCH students from the Indian sub-continent representing different courses such as Science, IT, Engineering and others. They are available online to have an informative interaction with you, to share their experience of studying in a reputed university such as UTS.
Now my niece feels extremely confident about what she wants to do. She has found a friend, an advisor and more importantly, someone who has helped her make up her mind for the right university and course. This became possible only because of the UTS Insiders platform- a unique idea of connecting present and aspiring students.
