Why Children’s Day Celebrated on 14th November ?
Children’s day / National Child Day – the day of children – is one of those days in India where, for once, the whole population unanimously becomes a child. 14th of November, also popularly celebrated as Children’s Day, was otherwise the birthday of Indian politician Jawaharlal Nehru. He was known to be dear to children and to have loved them equally; and to commemorate his contribution to our country; his birthday was chosen and dedicated to all the children across India – hence the celebration.
Man Behind Celebration of Children’s Day
This dedication of a day for the cause of children was the beginning of a trend-setter to what I now call as ‘One Day, One Cause’. Let’s have a look at the man behind the celebration: Nehru was the first Prime Minister of independent India in 1947. After his term as the premiere, he went on to become the minister of defence (1953-1955, 1957 Jan-April, 1962 Oct-Nov); minister of finance (1956 July-August, 1958 Feb-March) and minister of external affairs (1947-1964). He had his roots with the Kashmiri Pandit community and was known as ‘Pandit Nehru’, while children gave him the title ‘Chacha’ (uncle) Nehru.
How to Celebrate Children’s Day?
This would probably be the only day in the year when children would be eager to go to their schools, since their classes would be suspended for the day. Every school makes it a point to celebrate Children’s Day by conducting various programmes, most of which are usually music, dance, puppet shows, skits, etc. These activities are organized and performed by teachers themselves for their dear little monsters. Organizations such as ‘Bal Bhavan’ (a recreational centre designed for kids) conduct a variety of activities and competitions such as art & craft, games, sketching &painting, etc. children enjoy through & through; and they are usually rewarded with free food at the end of the event.
National Child Day – 14th November
While celebrations at schools are quite common, a thought towards the underprivileged children would make it even better. This could be done through encouragement of the students to go out of their way and share their happiness – by spending quality time with them. Not only the institutions, it will be thoughtful of the families to do the same for the underprivileged. This is a gesture of spreading positivity and equality – also, the children would be able to make new friends and at the same time open up their minds with a reality-check.
Bal Divas = 14th November
As easily said, it might seem equally difficult to bring out a change; but as we know, change is the only constant in our lives and an initiative is all that is required to set the idea in motion. However, being in a fast-forwarding era, kick starting an idea shouldn’t seem that big a challenge – especially one that is dedicated for a good cause. I also think that we do not need a specific day to celebrate love or childhood. In fact each day should be a feast; after all celebration is all about recognizing and appreciating a person, or someone’s work, or life in general. Hence, by appreciating the people around you – be it children or parents or friends etc – each day is automatically dedicated to your loved ones. And thus, could begin the GenZ’s journey towards equality and positive vibes.
